The Counselling Journey
Like a mountaineer who guides others upwards, I see therapy as a guided journey of exploration through the inner terrain of your experience. Having an experienced guide can help you navigate the terrain and pace as you climb your inner mountains. Making the ascent requires an artful balance of support and respectful challenge. At times, the journey may be tiring, even threatening, and it is human nature to resist what is painful. Such times of adversity, when handled with care, can provide us with the raw material we need to reach to higher levels of self- awareness from which authentic choices and more inspired living arise.
Regardless of the issue, you can expect:
- Empathic understanding.
- To be treated with respect.
- Feeling supported.
- Being accepted and affirmed in your struggles.
- Balanced feedback.
Philosophy and Approach
My approach to counselling is grounded in the following basic tenets:
- We are more than our biology or personal history.
- The past has influence but does not determine who or how we are.
- Human beings possess an innate drive towards growth and wisdom.
- Therapy is relational and collaborative rather than diagnostic.
- People possess inner resources but may not know how to access this part of themselves.
